12.18.2018: One Lesson of Math - Solving Quadratic Inequalities in One Variable, Part 4

Today's soundtrack is Christmas With the Mills Family, a Spotify playlist that includes my favourite Christmas songs.

To help visual learners understand quadratic inequalities, I've designed a chart with two graphs that detail how we should understand the equations.

To summarize, when our negative symbol in the equation inverts our parabola, it also inverts our solution, meaning that we need to carefully consider whether our equation is negative or positive before writing down an answer.

  • x² > 0 or -x² < 0

  • Intervals: solution, not solution, solution

  • Answer: x < #, or x > #, x ∈ ℝ

  • x² < 0 or -x² > 0

  • Intervals: not solution, solution, not solution

  • Answer: # < x < #, x ∈ ℝ
