01.09.2019: One Lesson of Math - Angles in Standard Position in Quadrant 1, Part 1

Today's soundtrack is Slayer: Reign in Blood, an album which needs no introduction and will go down in history as one of the greatest thrash metal albums of all time.

This evening, I'm starting Unit 6 of my Precalculus 11 course, "Trigonometry." I'll be working on the first chapter in the unit, "Angles in Standard Position in Quadrant 1."

We can look at angles in the context of inhabiting an x/y graphed space. We can determine the angle's standard position by measuring counterclockwise from the horizontal positive x-axis to the desired arm of the angle. The terminal point of the arm is the coordinate of the arm's end-point (graphed in x/y coordinates).

To find the trigonometric ratios of an angle when we know its terminal point, we must do the following:

1) Find the distance from the origin to the terminal point

a) The Pythagorean Theorem can be helpful with this!

2) Find the best trigonometric ratio with which to measure the angle

a) SOH CAH TOA

3) Use the trigonometric ratio to "determine the measure of θ to the nearest degree" (Pearson's Pre-calculus 11, p. 428).

I've run out of time for today; tomorrow, I'll be learning how to solve a problem using trigonometric ratios, and I'll try to get some examples up!
